Lux Aurea (Latin for Golden Light) is Giorgiko’s first international solo exhibition and is directly inspired by the Dutch painterly tradition, especially the 17th century Golden Age works. Whether including the mysterious and somewhat eerie landscapes or having their signature anachronistic characters dressed in historic outfits, the paintings are regularly mixing the archetypal classical visuals with urban culture elements. Graffiti in the background or fashion items such as baseball caps are seamlessly blended within an authentic atmosphere of old masterpieces, creating a timeless setting that connects the now and the past through the real and surreal.
The 12 new oil paintings for The Garage’s 16th-century carriage house space in the heart of Amsterdam are connected with a recurring motif of the mysterious light source. Forming schoolbook examples of chiaroscuro imagery these ambiguous glowing objects are representing the illuminating viewpoints and are kindling a tiny warmth in the cold environments they inhabit. Enwrapping their surrounding with distinctive colorful shine, these found, manufactured, and bestowed glimmering items are symbolizing the way our knowledge and perception determines the way we experience reality.
Lux Aurea opens Friday, September 13, 2019. Come join Giorgiko’s Darren Inouye on opening night.
